Islamic Finance in Malaysia: Politics and Policy Making How is it that Malaysia has captured the lion’s share of the global market for Islamic bonds (sukuk)? This is puzzling because rarely thought of as a key Muslim country like its neighbor, Indonesia with the world’s largest Muslim population, nor is it rich in capital like the GCC economies. This seminar will explore the motivations for the development of Islamic finance in Malaysia, as well as discuss the strategic policies and the deployment of political and technical leadership that have enabled the Malaysian economy to play a disproportionately significant role in the global market for Islamic finance. The presentation will conclude with some observations of remaining challenges faced by policy makers.
